Company Biography:

Formed in 1993 by educational technologists Gordon Layard and Ben Warburton, Pacific Multimedia PTY LTD has gone on to develop e-learning technologies for a large number of Australian and global corporate leaders and government departments (refer to client list).  The company directors identified that the expense and time frame involved in developing e-learning resources represented a large gap in the market for an automated solution.  Discussions began in the late 90s to develop a system to tackle the problem and automate the entire development process.  By early 2004 a provisional patent was filed and the design and development process began under the leadership of Development Manager, Andrew Poulos.  APIXEL Metamorphosis was officially released in August 2005.  CEO, Gordon Layard, continues to take responsibility for corporate strategy and oversees the company’s marketing direction.

Company/Innovation Profile:

APIXEL Metamorphosis is an automated e-learning authoring system. Traditional authoring systems rely on the costly and time-consuming approach of creating content screen-by-screen. Metamorphosis automatically creates entire courses without the need for screens to be individually identified, laid out and populated with content.  The system takes on these tasks entirely unaided and creates courses in minutes rather than weeks or months. 

Metamorphosis takes content found in an ordinary Word document and automatically creates:

• content screens based on the document’s text
• illustrations for the content using Metamorphosis’ own library of high quality images
• learning activities (both multiple choice and drag and drop cloze activities)
• attractive courseware interfaces and menus
• database files to track trainee progress and results.

The resulting course is then fully editable by the designer. 

For the first time, small and medium sized business and educational institutions can afford to create their own computer based training courses without the need for specialists authors. Large organisations can harness the technology to develop courses for time critical or low priority projects which would not normally justify the expense associated with e-learning development.
